About a Boy

About a Boy is a novel by Nick Hornby about the warm and imporbable relationship between an immature, selfish bachelor living off his father's wealth and a young boy living in a dysfunctional family.

The novel isn't a typical feel-happy novle. It's a realistic, coming of age story that deals with some pretty heavy subject matters. However, the author manages to balance it out with an off-kilter sense of humour. As a result, the author manages to create lighthearted yet meaningful disscussions regarding heavy subhects.

The characters in the story are unlikeable; in fact, they were written to be as unlikeable as possible. However, the author developed the characters in a way that made us sympathize with the deeply flawed yet well-meaning individuals.

"about a Boy" is a story that isn't well-known, only achieving publuc notice with the help of a TV-show adaptation and a feature movie. However, it is an honest and heartwarming coming of age story for both the young and adult characters.
