Angkringan, taken from a Javanese word angkring (ꦲꦁꦏꦿꦁ), is a wooden barrow which peddles a wide variety of street food and beverages, mostly available around Yogyakarta, Klaten, and Solo. Uniquely, in Solo and Klaten, people mention angkringan as HIK (Hidangan Istimewa ala Kampung) or Wedangan. Angkringan stalls are open from dusk until evening, and can serve up to eight customers.
The variations of food peddled in the angkringan are usually nasi kucing, gorengan, chicken intestine satay, quail egg satay, chips, etc. The beverages offered are mostly tea, orange juice, wedang jahe, milk, instant drinks, and the iconic: kopi joss. All the food and beverages are sold in a very affordable price range.
We highly recommend you to visit angkringan if you are going to visit Yogyakarta, Klaten, or Solo after the COVID-19 pandemic has ended. You definitely can enjoy a wide variety of delicious food and beverages with an affordable price that will not break your wallet. Most importantly, you can feel the traditional vibe while eating traditional food and beverages.
