Japan has lots of delicious and unique-tasting dishes, with sushi as one of the most well-known food. But do you know that despite its famousness in Japan, sushi actually originated from China?
It was not until the 8th century that the dish was called sushi - it’s original name was narezushi. Since refrigerators have not been invented yet, narezushi was made from fermented rice and salted fish to preserve the food.
The fish would be wrapped in rice and stored for months; when it is time to eat the fish, the rice will be thrown away!
By the 18th century, the dish spread to Edo and was changed by a cook named Hanaya Yohei. Instead of removing the rice, he added vinegar to it and placed a small piece of fish on top, serving it in delicious, bite-sized portions that are easy to carry around. Because of Hanaya Yohei’s doing, we are now able to enjoy sushi
