Alarming Call for Language Education

As the coronavirus pandemic has intensified the importance of global communications (through virtual meetings, streaming cultural contents, international news, social media), risks coming with it, such as inequalities and racism, has also doubled. To solve this problem, 5 international academies have joined together to collaborate.

The 5 international academies (American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the British Academy, the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, the Australian Academy of the Humanities, and the Royal Society of Canada) created a joint statement, The Importance of Languages in Global Context: An International Call to Action

To build more language skills in countries where English specially dominates, the academies call for more language education in schools, universities, colleges and workplaces with hope that it will inspire more discussions as well as greater emphasis on language instruction and revitalization.
