The first phone with a foldable screen was the Royole Flexpai by Royole launched on
January 8, 2018. It had a 7.8 inch display that was able to fold outward to reduce its footprint. Foldable screens use OLED instead of LEDs. OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diodes, as they are thin sheets of organic film wrapped in conductors.
When a foldable screen is made, the OLED is printed on a thin flexible piece of plastic. This allows manufacturers to create rounded edges (as seen in iPhones) or entirely foldable screens (as seen in GalaxyFolds).
The technology is still early in development, and typically costs a lot of money per screen area. The technology was recently developed to use strengthened glass instead of plastic to increase screen durability.Foldables have gained traction since 2019 with the launch of RAZR, Galaxy Z Flip and many more. The future of smartphones could lie on foldables.
