Internet Restrictions: Are they fair?

There are many countries around the world with governments who attempt to restrict how their citizens access the internet and the public press. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Vietnam, and China all restrict various parts of the internet in different ways.

The Indonesian government itself has attempted to block many sites, such as Reddit and free movie streaming sites. In China, people only get a limited number of tabs alongside some web restrictions. In more extreme cases, such as Eritrea, the entirety of the internet is controlled by the government and only about 1% of the population has gone online.

But there is one piece of software that allows people to bypass many of those restrictions. This piece of software is the VPN, or a virtual private network. A VPN is most certainly not the only way to bypass some of these restrictions, but it is one of the more common ways.

Usage of software such as VPN can easily be considered as violations of the law. Each country technically has the right to control the rights and the internet accessibility of its citizens. But just like anything, we need to ask with the bigger picture in mind.

Simply said, we are all starting to realize that the internet has become an integral part of our lives. The recent pandemic and news shows that more and more. With the world being a competitive place, perhaps it is due time that governments rethink their internet policies.
