Once you’ve done all the necessary & needed tests (SAT, TOEFL), you may need to start preparing for writing a personal statement/ essay. Although there are some universities who don’t need this, most top universities would need this to see your uniqueness and who you are. Therefore, here are some tips to help you:
Write about something that’s important to you
Doesn’t matter if it’s about your experience, person, or books as long as it’s important and memorable to you. The admissions want to see your memories not your imagination.
2. Don’t focus exclusively on the past
Admissions are looking for essays where students highlight their growth and instropections, don’t just brag or describe everything. Connect it with who you are now and how it’ll impact you as a person moving forward.
3. No repeats
In your essay, don’t contradict it with your other parts of your application & don’t repeat it. The essay is not your place to brag about your awards or your scores.
4. Start early and write several drafts
Set it aside for a few days and read it again. Put yourself as the admissions officer, Is this essay interesting enough? Engaging enough? If not, rewrite your essay again.
5. Have at least one other person edit your essay
To see whether your essay is engaging or attractive or unique enough, you can always try to ask someone else to check and edit your essay. Teacher or college counselor would be the best option.
