“Black Women are Not an Afterthought”

“I want you all to imagine what it must have felt like to be sleeping in your bed, when three police officers kick down your door, waking you up and shooting you eight times.” Tenelle Veira, a 29 year old makeup artist, single-handedly organized a protest in New York City to demand justice for Breonna Taylor, the now 27 year old EMT who, on March 13, was killed by three Louisville police officers.

Although a wrongful death lawsuit was filed two months after her death, an investigation was not opened until May 21. The three officers have not been charged with any crimes and are only held on administrative leave. Many people agreed that women were often sidelined in protests against police brutality. “And not only am I Black, I am a Black woman. So if you’re already at a disadvantage for being a woman, and you’re already at a disadvantage for being Black, imagine being both.” said Patricia Bellegarde.

Tenelle Veira led the hundreds of protestors to Domino Park in Williamsburg as they chanted:

“How many shots?”

“Eight shots.”

“Say her name,”

“Breonna Taylor.”
