Environmental Concerns Rising From RUU Cipta Kerja

RUU Cipta Kerja, a part of the Omnibus Law, which contains two other Rancangan Undang-Undang, has been a rising controversial topic amongst the public. This jobs bill concerns a large portion of the community especially the thousands of workers in Indonesia. Even after countless protests, the bill was legalized and confirmed earlier today (Monday 5/10/20). One main concern that stems from the legalization of this bill is the impact it will bring to the environment.

35 investors have expressed their disagreement by writing to the government. “While we recognize the necessity for reform of business law in Indonesia we have concerns about the negative impact of certain environmental protection measures affected by the Omnibus Bill on Job Creation,” says Peter van der Werf, a senior engagement specialist at Robeco. The bill introduces incentives for mining industries. Other than that, the coal industry will get a license extension up to the lifetime of the mine. Greenpeace Indonesia has said that this bill will worsen the climate problem in Indonesia.
