What's Happening in Thailand?

What’s Happening in Thailand? (A Short Summary)

For the past three months, continuous protests led by students have been happening in Thailand. Though the protests started earlier in the year, the lockdown briefly stopped them. The protestors are gathering against one main thing: the government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha. On May 22, 2014, Prayut led a coup which resulted in a 5-6 year period of military rule. Since that coup, the people in Thailand have been under the control of a military dictatorship or junta government. Activists, students, and people who have expressed their anger and disagreement are faced with several consequences. Freedom of speech, a basic human right, has been disregarded by actions of the government such as “enforcing media censorship”, “banning public gathering”, and “violently cracking down on dissent.” This problem of the abuse of power is allowed to continue by the drafted constitution.

Therefore, according to https://freedomforthai-en.carrd.co/ , the three main demands of the protestors include:

  1. The government must dissolve the parliament.

  2. The government must stop threatening civil liberty

  3. A new constitution must be drafted.
