Hadley Sikes: The Impact of an MIT Chemical Engineering Professor

Hadley Sikes, an associate professor, recently earned tenure in the Department of Chemical Engineering in MIT. She spends most of her time creating simple, inexpensive tests for various diseases including cancer, tuberculosis, and malaria.

Recently, she is focusing much of her time towards devising a test for COVID-19. Although most tests tend to look for the virus’s RNA, Sikes wants this test to detect viral proteins, which would yield quicker results.

Most of her tests are based on the understanding of reactions, including redox reactions. Now, her work is separated into two main projects: sensors that help cancer doctors predict the best treatment and sensors for infectious diseases.
